When facades come to life: architectural sculpture in the 21st century

Beauty has disappeared from architecture not because of artistic choice - but because of cost. IKONERA is changing that.

A century of unadorned architecture

There was a time when every building, even the most ordinary, bore an artistic signature. Sculpted columns, bas-relief friezes, facades adorned with stone motifs - architecture was inseparable from art. The twentieth century changed all that. The standardisation of concrete, the mechanisation of construction and the explosion in the cost of skilled labour gradually erased this heritage. The result: uniform cities, repetitive buildings, and beauty that has become a luxury.

It's not a question of taste. It's a question of cost. Having a façade sculpted by a craftsman today costs between 5 and 7 times more than it did at the beginning of the 20th century. For developers and architects, ornament has become a financial risk, not an added value.

Robotics as a practical response

IKONERA was born of a simple conviction: architectural beauty should not be reserved for projects with unlimited budgets. Thanks to a 7-axis CNC robot - the ROBOTOR ONE-L - and artificial intelligence for 3D modelling, IKONERA can now reproduce or create sculptural elements in natural stone (marble, granite, limestone) to an accuracy of 0.1 mm, 24 hours a day.

In practical terms, a historic facade element that would take a craftsman several weeks to carve can be completed in just a few days. The cost reduction is up to 90% compared with the traditional method. A complete sculpted façade, previously estimated at 90,000 CHF, can be delivered for around 30,000 CHF - a saving of 67%.

No compromise on authenticity

The fear is understandable: can a machine really produce something artistic? IKONERA's answer is categorical. The robot does 95% of the cutting work - the most repetitive and costly part. The remaining 5%, the finishing work, is carried out by skilled craftsmen who add the final human touch. The stone remains real stone. The authenticity of the material is preserved.

What's more, the AI used for design enables formal explorations that would be impossible by hand. Complex geometries, perfect repetitions, adaptations to existing designs - everything becomes possible without the usual extra cost of complexity.

An opportunity for architects and developers

For architectural offices, IKONERA represents a new freedom: the ability to reintegrate sculpted stone into projects without blowing the budget. For property developers, it's a tangible differentiating advantage in an increasingly homogenous market. A building that stands out visually sells better and is valued differently.

IKONERA works directly with architects right from the design phase - from 3D modelling to delivery of the finished element. A tailor-made approach, from brief to site.
